Project Information

Horses and Humans is a documentary that captures the historic heritage and relationship between horses and humans in the New Forest stretching over hundreds of years on an educational history DVD resource for History Key Stages 2 and 3.

Working with young people with learning difficulties and disabilities from the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy (FCRT), the project explored events like the English Civil War and Britain in the 1930’s as part of the History national curriculum.  The project also provided an opportunity to learn research skills as living memories were recorded from public interviews to create the DVD.

The project's three main elements:

1) Research Events held throughout the New Forest to gather living memories of horses and humans in the New Forest, and to provide opportunities for the young people of the Fortune Centre to learn new communications skills.

2) A Creative Lab was run at the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy to kindle creative discussions about equine heritage in the New Forest and develop the narrative structure of the educational DVD.

3) Active Learning provided the young people at the Fortune Centre with practical experience using digital media technology by working alongside professional film makers to create elements of the educational DVD.
