Our Media Education programme offers both formal media training for new entrants and professionals and informal media education projects for young people.

Media Education for young people offers opportunities which address the personal and social development of both communities and individuals. It presents an ideal vehicle to develop communities of interest in keeping with the broad themes of lifelong learning, social inclusion and active citizenship.

Media Education is an approach that is relevant and accessible to all sectors of the community, developing awareness of, and respect for, self, others and the society. It is important that educational activities are distinguished from those that are purely recreational. While recreational activities may be very enjoyable, and even valuable, such activities do not necessarily justify the use of educational resources. Media Education involves strong learning opportunities and achievement enhancing the experience of participation.

Our approach is relevant and accessible to young people and all sectors of the community involving strong learning opportunities, both active and life-long. Our Media Education programme supports:

  • Personal and Social Skills Development
  • Active learning, learning whilst creating
  • Learning from mentors and industry professionals
  • Overcoming challenge by working together
  • Holistic education (intellectual, physical, emotional, aesthetic)
  • The need to respond to factors outside our control
  • Individuals to take responsibility for their own learning
  • Adaptability to change
  • Skills Acquisition
  • Technical training
  • Fun and enjoyment

White Lantern Film has had over 6 years production experience managing community projects, working with young people on media education projects, and creating broadcast quality programmes.  In 2007 we worked with over 30 young people to create three short films and in 2008 we are working with a group of young people to create a local history educational DVD.

We also provide a mentoring scheme and have helped several My-MediaBox applicants create new work and supported two Big Boost applicants with their successful bids for funding.

All our projects involve groups of young people nurturing ideas through a creative process and enhancing their media experience by working with broadcast professionals.  A key focus for all our projects is script development through our Creative Lab and marketing / distribution training to enhance the filmmaking process
